Rauhanliike on viime vuosina kritisoinut jyrkästi Nobel-komiteaa siitä, ettei se noudata Alfred Nobelin testamenttia ja tarkoitusta, että palkinto jaetaan toimijalle, joka aidosti työskentelee rauhan puolesta.

Alle vuoden virassaan istunut Yhdysvaltain presidentti Barack Obama palkittiin tävuonna Nobelin rauhanpalkinnolla. Arvostelijoiden mielestä palkinto jaettiin etuajassa. Jättimäisen finanssikriisin tuhojen kanssa painiva Obama ei kuitenkaan ole vielä ehtinyt osoittaa Nobelin arvoista uhrautumista paremman maailman eteen.

Nobelin rauhankomitean valintaperusteissa Obamaa kiitellään erityisesti uuden toiveikkaan ilmapiirin luomisesta maailmaan. Obama on tuonut ”moninapaisen diplomatian” sekä ”kansainvälisten järjestöjen vahvistamisen” takaisin maailmanpolitiikkaan.
